Passports
Passports are required for entrance into just about any foreign country. To request a passport, visit a location approved by the State Department with two 4-inch square (2x2) passport photos and proof of identity. Most European countries don't require a visa if your visit is less than either 30 or 90 days, depending on the country. See the chart below or visit the State Department's website to determine the entry requirements for the country that you want to visit.

New Passport
If you've never had a passport before or you lost your first one, this State Department site provides a search for locating the closest location to requeset a new passport.

Renew A Passport
If you already have a passport and just need to have it renewed, you do not need to appear in person. Instead you can mail in your old passport for the State Department to renew it. This site lists the qualifications that you must meet for renewal.

Passport Tips
-apply for your passport several months before your trip; allow even more time if visas are required
-make two photocopies of your passport (the page with your photo) and bring them with you as a back-up should you lose your passport
-scan your passport and e-mail it to yourself; should you manage to lose your passport and back-ups, you’ll have a copy that you can access from any computer
-carry two passport size photos with you for unforseen emergencies
